KIPPAH / YARMULKE

Today marks the start of the Hanukkah celebration. Let the menorah burn bright and celebrate the festival of lights. I'm not Jewish, but have always appreciated the rich traditions - ever since I attended a friend's bar mitzvah in the 8th grade. I remember being genuinely thrilled when the DJ played the Macarena. That was hip back in 1998.

Although you won't typically find me wearing a kippah (also called a yarmulke), I fell in love with Kid Kippot's TMNT design. I appreciate the combination of Jewish culture and Turtle Power. It's not something you'd ever find on store shelves, which makes it even more special.

The last time a yarmulke graced my head was at the glorious Macarena-danced bar mitzvah I attended in '98. I entered the event and quickly noticed everyone was wearing the garment. My little 8th grade nerves tensed and I worried I would stand out for not being Jewish. Thankfully, I was quickly offered a yarmulke for the festivities. I secured it on my head and never looked back. I loved wearing it! The yarmulke was a key that unlocked a fascinating universe different from my own.

Elizabeth, founder of of Kid Kippot, has a cool backstory. Her boys began school and needed to wear a kippah everyday. Rather than mess with clips and wear something unwashable, she created a variety of fun and stylish designs for them to wear. From superheroes to sports teams, Kid Kippot has a wild variety of inventive creations.

For The Sewer Den, the TMNT kippah takes the cake. The radical pattern features the Turtles from the original cartoon series. The vivid colors burst from the fabric and really grab your attention. Although intended for kids, I think it looks pretty good on my noggin too.

Looking to celebrate Hanukkah with cowabunga-style? Visit Kid Kippot's website or Etsy store to snag your own TMNT kippah.

Each day of 24 Days of Turtle will feature a Turtle-Powered present.

In honor of the festival of lights, today's gift is 3 Nickelodeon TMNT candles. Get crafty and use these to create Hanukkah decorations. Or go paperless and make your own digital menorah!

Check back tomorrow for DAY 17 of 24 Days of Turtle for more festive fun, gracious gifts, and possible prizes! Until then, Happy Hanukkah dudes & dudettes!

  1. Great Post! I'm not Jewish, but if I was, I would totally wear this TMNT yarmulke.
