VINTAGE SLED
(1989)
I often spot vintage sleds when scouring antique shops and flea markets. The rusted metal and splintering wood is an alluring combination. Although enticing to the eye, these aged masterpieces are not a symbol of my childhood. None of the kids in my hometown hit the snowy hills with a heavy duty sleds of that nature. Nope, we were sliding through the powder on pure plastic.
Unfortunately, I had a plastic purple sled that was a big as a boat and as slow as a turtle. And no, not the cool, mutated kind. Other kids bolted past me in an excited blur, while my snow wagon crawled down the fluffy hills. Races usually left me sulking in last place.
Now decades later, the throne is mine for the taking. I recently tracked down this plastic sled brimming with the proper kind of Turtle Power. Small and spherical, I plan on gliding down the slopes in a snow-melting blaze. When the next storm strikes, me and my trusty TMNT sled will be prepared.
The fine folks from the Far North continually survive brutal winters. So when it comes to sled construction, I trust Canada. Those natives know their snow. This vintage beast better deliver unrivaled speed, even if I am a 31 year old dude riding a 25 year old sled.
Does skiing with swords seem like a bad idea to anyone else?

That sled is all kinds of awesome, I could never be trusted with one of those as a kid as I was to crazy on the hill and would've for sure lost control and ended up with me stuck in a tree and that sled in a hundred pieces, I only got the sleds that kept you going straight and those were dangerous enough.

The infamous purple sled I had as a kid was similar to the one you described. It wasn't extreme by any means and probably safer than any current automobile with airbags. So this TMNT one looks to add a wild streak in my life. Hopefully I don't end up in a tree!

ReplyDeleteIve actually never got to have the "sledding down a hill" experience as a kid. The disadvantages of living in a tight-packed city neighborhood. The only thing close to a sled we had was when our neighbor would hook a plastic kiddie pool up to his riding lawn mower and pull us around the cul-de-sac. We probably looked like lunatics but it was really fun haha. Cant wait for tomorrows post!
The lawn mower adventures sound awesome! I'm happy to hear you and your pals got creative with what you had. It sure beats sitting inside and letting the world pass you by. Maybe kiddie pool lawn mower riding can become an olympic sport..?
DeleteSkiing with swords seems like a great idea to me. That way you could clear out branches that get in your way.
ReplyDeleteThat's one of the problems with living in such a flat area. There's no place to enjoy a ride on a sled, unless you get pulled behind something else.
That's a brilliant idea, Chris! Chop those branches while you cruise through the snow - now there's some skill for ya.
DeleteWhere I lived was pretty flat too. There were 2 "mountains" (leftover dirt piles from construction) in our neighborhood. Their names were cooler than their steepness - "Devil's Mountain" & "Half-moon Hill."
We need to find us a solid sledding location!
I always thought skiing with swords was probably the most efficient way to ski! Due to my dislike of outdoors, I always did my sledding inside (as in, sledding down a full flight of stairs on a slab of cardboard. Probably not one of my more brilliant moves). Love those gifttags!
ReplyDeleteSledding indoors! I completely forgot about that! That scene in Home Alone was so well crafted, I was always inspired to try that at home. Of course, my parents never let me do it with a real sled. I plopped myself on a piece of cardboard as well.
