Cowabunga Christmas: Holiday Card (with Button!)

Turtle Tidings! Join me on a sewer sleigh ride and celebrate the holiday season with Turtle Power. Throughout December, I'll be featuring a slew of seasonal Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles items from past to present. In The Sewer Den's 5th year running, Cowabunga Christmas will be brimming with festive creations, wacky discoveries, and plenty of pizza! Get merry.

OOZING WITH HOLIDAY SPIRIT

Your mailbox will never see anything this perfect.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Christmas card is no ordinary piece of mail.

It's majestic.
It's festive.
It includes a button!

Printed in the UK and licensed in Australia in 1990, I have no idea the true origins of this paper beauty. It's definitely not an American product, making it internationally awesome. The artwork is classic TMNT perfection, designed with the wacky style we all loved as kids. Making Ninja Turtles merchandise was the Wild West back in late 80s & early 90s. No rules, no consistency, or no real style guide. Artists made wacky choices that often went unquestioned, resulting in many outlandish creations - like this holiday card! Example - why are there two Michelangelos here?!

NAUGHTY OR NICE?

If the two Michelangelos building a snow-Turtle weren't enough for you, there's a third Michelaneglo! The button attached to the card brings even more Mikey to the holiday season. It's wonderfully simple with its "Cowabunga Greetings" and a floating Turtle head. I wish it was a little more festive, but can I really complain about a button included on a greeting card? There's gotta be more important things in the world to whine about. So yeah...the button is most excellent!

Inside the card is another simple message along with black & white artwork. I'd assume the four Turtles featured here are all the Turtles, but based off the Michelangelo-obsessed design on the front of the card and button, maybe it's four Michelangelos we're seeing? We may never know the truth, dudes.

COWABUNGA CONCLUSION

Can't you tell by now? I'm captivated by this card! It belongs framed and on display for all to see. There's an endless supply of Ninja Turtles holiday items, but it's hard to top something like this. There's weird artwork, noticeable mistakes, and a button! During the holiday season, it's the perfect piece to put on display. Come visit me and you'll see it. Now, go grab a few Michelangelos and go make yourself a snowman snow Turtle.

Check back for more holiday hijinks all December during Cowabunga Christmas!

  1. Are they Michelangelo, or Raphael? I only ask because the bandana color on the pin looks different from that on the book. And why did they make a snowman Donatello? This card just raises sooo many questions..

    1. All good questions! I assumed it was Michelangelo just because it seems like something he would do. The card also looks a little more orange than red IRL, but maybe I'm totally wrong and this post is filled with holes! Entirely possible.

      You deserve the button.

Forgiveness is divine, but never pay full price for late pizza.
